Garaventa vertical platform lifts
Step-free access indoors and outdoors
A vertical platform lift bridges small level differences of up to around 3 metres, making areas accessible that would otherwise only be reached via steps. It creates accessibility wherever there isn’t enough space for a ramp and a full lift would be too complex, such as at house entrances, terraces, balconies, or between two levels inside a building.
Garaventa Lift platform lifts are designed for people who want to move around safely and as independently as possible. They support wheelchair users, people with walking aids, older adults, and families with prams/strollers in everyday life. The platform can be accessed at ground level, and the controls are simple and easy to understand.
Our platform lift models
Garaventa Lift offers two platform lift models that can be used both indoors and outdoors. Both combine a compact design with high stability and can be adapted flexibly to different building conditions. Where can a platform lift be installed?
A platform lift can be installed anywhere stairs make access difficult. It’s suitable for indoor and outdoor use and doesn’t require its own shaft. In most cases, all that’s needed is a stable foundation and a power connection. Thanks to its compact design, the lift can be placed right next to a staircase, on a landing, by a terrace, or at a balcony, making entrances or even a lower garden level below a terrace accessible without steps.
A platform lift works well for single-family homes, apartment buildings, medical practices, small shops, and public buildings when you need to bridge one level change without installing a full-size elevator. Retrofitting is often possible in existing buildings too, because the installation usually requires minimal changes to the structure.
How is a vertical platform lift installed?
A vertical platform lift is always installed by trained specialists. First, they inspect the planned location, measure the travel height and available space, and decide the best installation setup. Next, a stable foundation is prepared and the vertical platform lift is securely bolted into place. In parallel, an electrician installs the power supply, usually a dedicated, separately fused 230 V line.
After that, the technicians assemble the supporting structure, platform, doors, and guards, connect the drive and controls, and configure all safety functions, such as door interlocks, emergency stop, sensors, and emergency lowering.

Many technical products can be bought used, and platform lifts are no exception. However, there are important points to consider before purchasing a pre-owned lift. In many cases, a lift can’t simply be removed and reinstalled elsewhere without modifications. You should also look closely at how long the previous owner used the model, because even high-quality lifts are subject to wear, which increases the risk of breakdowns and can lead to costly repairs. On top of that, transport and on-site installation still apply and often make up a large part of the total cost. In the end, a used lift can even become more expensive than a new one. For that reason, it’s best to review used offers very carefully or consider buying new from the start.

Thanks to its self-supporting design, the OPAL platform lift is very well suited for retrofit installation. Outdoors, a foundation is usually enough. With a pit depth of only 8 cm, the platform can be accessed at ground level. Indoors, where a pit often isn’t possible, a special ramp makes it easier to roll onto the platform. Depending on your needs, the OPAL can be configured as a through-access lift or with 90° offset entry/exit.
Platform lifts like the OPAL are operated as standard via practical rocker switches on the inside of the car/platform area. If the lift is used by multiple people, the stops can also be fitted with external call controls. Optional extras include automatic door openers and key activation to prevent unauthorised use.

Platform lifts for wheelchairs, walkers and walking aids
A vertical platform lift is designed specifically for people who use a wheelchair, rollator/walker, or walking aids. The level platform lets you overcome height differences without physical effort. Wheelchair users can usually operate the lift independently, and a companion may travel along depending on the model’s rated load. Power wheelchairs and other mobility aids can also be carried, as long as the platform size and maximum load match the lift.
Vertical platform lifts don’t only help one person—they increase comfort and safety for everyone in a building. They are ideal for connecting indoors and outdoors, for example when access to a terrace or a lower garden level would otherwise only be possible via steps. In clinics, practices, or shops, they reduce barriers for visitors and customers without needing a full passenger lift.
Models, lifting height, and features of vertical platform lifts
Vertical platform lifts come in different model variants. Each manufacturer offers multiple products that differ in lifting height, capacity, equipment, and platform dimensions. Some models cover small rises—from just a few centimetres up to about 1.80 m—while others reach a maximum lifting height of around 3 m. Key technical figures include load capacity (kg), lifting height (mm or m), and available platform sizes.
Depending on the version, features may include enclosed side panels, doors, railings, handrails, and controls on the platform. Many vertical platform lifts also offer options such as remote controls, wireless controls, automatic door opening, different materials (metal, glass, powder-coated finishes), and extra lighting. Some systems serve one stop, others can serve multiple stops. The right configuration should always match the installation site, the intended use, and the needs of the users.
Installation and set-up of vertical platform lifts
Vertical platform lifts are usually installed by trained fitters from the provider or an authorised service partner. Before installation, an on-site planning visit typically takes place to check the location, available space, height difference, and building conditions. These factors determine the best model and the optimal installation layout.
For installation, a small foundation slab is often prepared and the vertical platform lift is anchored securely. In most cases, no shaft is required. Power is supplied via a dedicated line suitable for operating the lifting system. After installation, technicians test the key functions, commission the lift, and explain how to use it. The manufacturer provides the required documents such as test records and technical documentation.
Costs of a vertical platform lift and key factors
Many customers first ask about costs and model prices. The total cost depends on factors such as lifting height, required capacity, chosen features, the installation situation, and the region. A simple vertical platform lift for a small height difference costs less than a more fully equipped system with a larger platform and multiple levels.
Costs include more than just the purchase price: they can also include accessories, installation, possible adjustments to railings or entrance areas, and ongoing expenses for maintenance and inspections. Early advice helps you compare costs clearly and plan a sensible investment.
Funding, grants, and financing
In many cases, financial support is available for vertical platform lifts. Grants may be possible through long-term care insurance, programmes from the KfW development bank, or other loans and regional support schemes. Eligibility depends not only on the cost but also on the applicant’s personal situation.
A vertical platform lift is often a long-term investment in accessibility, independence, and the future usability of a home. Good providers support the planning process, give tips on possible grants, and help compile the documents needed—making costs easier to manage and financing more straightforward.
Maintenance, service, and daily operation
To keep a vertical platform lift reliable in everyday use, regular maintenance and inspections are important. Many manufacturers offer service contracts with scheduled checks of the drive system, load performance, safety functions, and the condition of materials. This reduces effort for the operator and helps ensure the lift remains safe even after many years.
If a fault occurs, service partners can assist. Safety features such as emergency lowering and battery backup help ensure users can leave the platform safely even during power issues, so long-term comfort is maintained for wheelchair users, companions, and all other users.
Advice on choosing the right vertical platform lift model
Because every installation is different, personal advice from the manufacturer is worthwhile. A good provider takes time to answer questions, explains how different vertical platform lifts work, and shows which model fits which heights, loads, and locations. With a clear overview of models, features, and lifting heights, it becomes easier to identify what suits a home, apartment building, or commercial property.
A vertical platform lift is more than a transport device—it connects levels, removes barriers, and supports long-term independence. Those who plan early, compare models, and define their needs clearly can find a system that fits their situation in function, design, and cost.
