Platform lift for greater accessibility
For indoor and outdoor use
Platform lifts provide barrier-free access wherever stairs or significant changes in height make everyday life more difficult. They safely transport people using a wheelchair, walker/rollator, or walking aid between different levels, connecting, for example, the entrance, living area, garage, terrace, or garden.
This also makes it easier to improve access in hillside homes or retrofit existing buildings without major structural alterations, helping people maintain independence even with limited mobility.
Tailor-made solutions for straight and curved staircases
Our platform lifts can be planned flexibly, are easy to install and thanks to the automatically folding platform, save space so the staircase remains easily accessible in residential and public buildings.

Where can a platform lift be installed?
A platform lift can be retrofitted in many types of buildings, single-family homes, apartment buildings, residential complexes, offices and public facilities. It works indoors and outdoors and can be used at entrances, over a few steps, or along full stair runs across multiple floors. With a cable traction system, travel distances of up to around 50 meters are possible, including several curves and stops. This creates step-free access for people using a wheelchair, rollator, or walking aid, especially where a traditional elevator isn’t feasible.
How is a platform lift installed?
A platform lift is fixed to the staircase or handrail and usually doesn’t require major building work. First, experts assess the site and define the mounting points. Then certified installers fit the rails and lift efficiently and with minimal disruption. Every component is tested according to strict safety standards, and outdoor systems are additionally protected against weather. Regular servicing is recommended: once per year indoors and at least twice per year outdoors.

Platform Lift Video
The drive unit is positioned above the upper landing, outside the staircase. This keeps the platform very slim and means there’s no need for a motor or batteries inside the platform, ideal for narrow staircases.
Because the platform lift is connected directly to the mains power supply, it remains reliable even with frequent use and over long travel distances.
When parked, the platform is folded up. At the push of a button, it folds down electrically—and after the trip, it folds back up again. Using a remote control or a wired control unit, you can call the lift to you or send it away.
Depending on the model, a platform lift can carry up to 300 kg and is tailored to your specific staircase.
A Garaventa platform lift can be installed indoors or outdoors. It’s ideal when wheelchair users or people with walking aids are blocked by stairs, or when loads need to be moved between floors. Whether a lift is possible mainly depends on stair width and the space in front of the stairs—our team can check this directly on site.
Platform lifts have low, flat ramps so a wheelchair can roll on and off easily. You’ll need enough space in front of the stairs so the platform can travel fully down to floor level for smooth, step-free entry and exit.
In general, you can apply for different types of financial support when buying a platform lift. In recent years, funding for home modifications that improve accessibility has even increased. Under the Care Strengthening Act (in force since 2015), the subsidy per measure was raised from €2,557 to up to €4,000. Up to four people can benefit from funding for the same lift if all care-dependent persons live in the same household and the total of the individual subsidies is less than the purchase price of the lift. Important: the application must be submitted before the lift is installed. Since the reclassification into five care levels at the beginning of 2017, people in the new care grade 1 may also apply. For details, please contact your long-term care insurance provider.

Garaventa Lift platform stairlift for wheelchairs
A Garaventa Lift platform stairlift is a practical choice when stairs, indoors or outdoors, become a daily obstacle. Instead of major renovations, a modern lift helps you pass several steps comfortably and safely, giving you more freedom of movement, quality of life, and independence at home (in a house, apartment, or shared building).
Especially when mobility is limited, you can continue to move around in your familiar surroundings, whether in a single-family home, an apartment building, or to create step-free access to the garden. That means you don’t have to leave your home or give up your social connections.
Overview: Which lift suits your staircase?
Garaventa Lift is an experienced manufacturer and supplier of platform stairlifts, platform lifts, vertical lifts, lifting platforms, and other lift solutions. A platform stairlift is designed specifically for different stair shapes and layouts—so the final solution fits your needs and the building conditions.
Our experts first review key points such as:
- How many steps are there?
- Is the staircase straight, turning, or does it have landings?
- How tight is the space (walls/clearances) and what is the required footprint?
- What local requirements and safety conditions apply?
Based on this, we recommend a suitable model with the right functions for your personal situation.
Straight stairs, curves, and complex layouts
Gerade Treppen, Kurven und komplexe Treppenverläufe
Whether the stairs are straight, spiral/turning, or more complex, a platform stairlift can be adapted to almost any configuration. Straight stairs often allow a simpler rail setup, while tight curves, landings, or narrow stairwells may require a custom-made solution.
The design always follows the existing layout so there is enough room for other stair users and all safety requirements are met. Existing handrails are also considered so the stairs can still be used comfortably on foot.
Travel height, rail length, and arrangement
Important planning factors include:
- The required vertical rise
- The correct rail length
- The route of the track and rail system
- Space needed at entry and exit points
Garaventa Lift specialists check everything on site and plan the best rail arrangement, so the lift runs smoothly while the staircase remains usable as a normal walkway.
Platform sizes, load capacity, and materials
A modern platform stairlift is always matched to real-world use. Different platform sizes and the right load rating make sure that a wheelchair, a companion, and mobility aids can be transported safely.
Typically, robust steel and stainless steel are used. For outdoor installations, a powerful platform heater can be added so the lift remains safe to operate in winter.
If required, custom builds and extras are possible, such as special ramps, safety panels, safety arms, or an integrated folding seat. These features improve everyday comfort and add flexibility, especially when multiple people use the lift in different ways.
Indoor and outdoor use
Garaventa Lift platform stairlifts are suitable for indoor use in private homes, apartment buildings, and public buildings. The installation situation is carefully assessed to ensure the lift fits the building structure.
Depending on the staircase, the rail can be fixed to the wall or mounted on stable support posts, so the lift integrates neatly without changing the character of your home.
Outdoor installation
Outdoors, a platform stairlift can be a comfortable alternative to a larger elevator system. In some cases, a vertical lift or lifting platform may be the better option—for example, when the height difference is small over a short distance. Sometimes a small pit is needed to create level access.
An inclined platform lift installed along a façade follows the line of the stairs. The rail is fixed to supports or walls, and durable materials like stainless steel, weather-resistant safety panels, and an optional platform heater help ensure safe travel in all conditions.
Safety, features, and operation
At Garaventa Lift, safety and easy operation are key. A modern platform stairlift can include:
- Emergency stop and safety arms
- Strong safety panels
- Automatic entry ramps
- Easy-to-reach controls
- Wireless remote control to call the lift
- Optional folding seat or “seat mode”
In the event of a power outage, an emergency power system allows the lift to continue safely to the next stop at around 0.15 m/s. All lifts comply with the relevant operational safety rules and applicable safety standards.
Planning, site visit, installation
Step one: enquiry and consultation
Your platform stairlift starts with a non-binding enquiry. In a personal consultation, Garaventa Lift answers your questions, explains features and options, and helps you choose the right model. Often, this is followed by an on-site visit, where our experts record the exact staircase situation: stair shape, route, number of steps, and all building conditions. This allows realistic quotes and reliable planning.
Installation and commissioning
Based on the collected measurements, you receive a clear offer with transparent pricing, showing equipment options, extras, and possible funding opportunities. After you decide, Garaventa Lift takes care of:
- Design and (if needed) custom fabrication
- Preparing mounting points
- Installing rails, track system, and platform
- Final setup and start-up of the system
Depending on the site, the lift is mounted to walls or supports to keep the space requirement as small as possible. After only a few steps, the system is ready for use.
More freedom of movement in everyday life
A platform stairlift gives you greater independence day to day. The ride starts at the push of a button, the platform moves quietly along the rail, and the wireless remote lets you call the lift to the floor you need at any time. This helps you maintain mobility, confidence, and independence in your own home. Instead of struggling with stairs, or thinking about moving, you create a reliable connection between the levels of your house.
Garaventa Lift continues to support you after installation as well:
We help with servicing, day-to-day operation questions, and any adjustments that may be needed over time. With a platform stairlift, you can overcome barriers, gain freedom of movement, and improve quality of life at home for the long term.
