Stairlift for your home
A stairlift is the ideal solution for anyone who, despite having difficulty climbing stairs, wants to continue living independently in their own home.
Depending on the staircase and your needs, there are suitable solutions such as seated stairlifts, platform lifts, or outdoor models. The features and installation situation determine the cost. This way, you get a stairlift that fits your life perfectly and brings greater independence to your home.
Different types of stairlifts
There are different types of stairlifts, including straight stairlifts, curved stairlifts, and platform lifts. Each type has specific functions and advantages.
Straight stairlifts
Since most staircases are straight, a straight stairlift is often the simplest and quickest solution. Designed specifically for straight stairs, these lifts have a standardized rail that can be precisely cut to the length of any straight staircase. Straight stairlifts are available quickly, and installation by one of our factory-trained technicians takes only a few hours.

Where can a seated stairlift be installed?
A seated stairlift can be installed on most staircases in and around the home. This includes straight stairs, curved stairs, spiral staircases, and staircases with intermediate landings. The key requirement is that there is enough space for the stairlift to travel safely while still allowing other people to use the stairs.
If a staircase is very narrow or structurally challenging, our advisors will assess your situation on site and, if necessary, suggest suitable alternatives or a different location for the seated stairlift. Take a look at the images below to see some of our reference projects for seated stairlifts.
How is a seated stairlift installed?
A seated stairlift is always planned individually. After an in-home consultation, the specialist advisor measures your staircase precisely and determines the route, mounting points, and parking positions. Based on this, the rail and seated stairlift are manufactured to fit your staircase.
During installation, the rail is mounted on the steps or on the wall, and then the drive unit and seat, with armrests, belt, and footrest, are fitted. After several test runs, the installer explains how to operate it, and the seated stairlift is immediately ready for safe use.

Are there subsidies from the long-term care insurance fund (Pflegekasse) for a stairlift?
Yes, the Pflegekasse often covers part of the costs. If you or someone in your household has a care grade (Pflegegrad), you can apply to the Pflegekasse for a subsidy for measures to improve the living environment. This also includes a stairlift. Up to €4,180 per person in need of care is possible. If several people in need of care live together, the subsidies can add up—for example, up to €16,720 for four people. Eligibility applies from Pflegegrad 1.
It’s important that the application reaches the Pflegekasse before the lift is installed. A short informal letter is enough to start; you will then receive the required documents from the fund. If no Pflegegrad has been assigned yet, you must apply for it first. Funding typically covers lifts that make essential rooms such as the bedroom, bathroom, or kitchen accessible—or that secure access to the home in the first place.
We’re happy to support you with the next steps. After a personal consultation, you’ll receive a clear quote so you can see what costs will apply and roughly how high your out-of-pocket share will be after subsidies. If you wish, we can also inform you about additional funding options, for example through KfW or other bodies, as well as financing solutions via Garaventa Lift.
Frequently asked questions
For any major purchase that changes your life, you naturally want to know in advance what costs you can expect. The average cost of a Garaventa Lift stairlift depends on many factors, such as the structural conditions of your home, the shape of the staircase, the technical possibilities, and your individual equipment preferences. Each stairlift is therefore tailored specifically to your home and your needs. Our lifts are made from high-quality components and are manufactured and installed by highly qualified staff and dedicated technicians using professional tools, in compliance with national and international safety standards.
In principle, a stairlift is suitable for anyone who finds it difficult—or can no longer manage at all—to handle steps, stairs, and changes in height on their own, or who simply wants to make everyday life easier. In such cases, stairlifts are a great help. In addition to providing strong support, they reduce the risk of falls and accidents.
Which stairlift is suitable for your personal situation depends primarily on your needs and your living situation. If you rely on a wheelchair, a seated stairlift will not be the right solution for you. In that case, we recommend a platform stairlift or a vertical solution. If you can still move well on one level and only have problems overcoming steps and stairs, a seated stairlift is usually the more affordable option. If you own a house with two or more floors, you may also consider installing a home lift.
In any case, one of our experienced advisors will clarify your situation in a detailed consultation, present the stairlift options best suited to your individual circumstances, and work with you to find the best solution.
Safety is the top priority in the development, design, and use of stairlifts. That’s why modern lifts—depending on the system and version—are equipped with seat belts, support backrests, or hinged rails. The speed of stairlifts is also limited to a maximum of 0.15 m/s. The reason is simple: if a danger occurs (e.g., an obstacle on the stairs), such lifts must come to an immediate stop without endangering the user. To ensure reliable operation even during a sudden power outage, battery operation or an emergency power supply should always be provided. In addition, stairlifts in Germany are subject to the guidelines of the Equipment and Product Safety Act in conjunction with the Machinery Directive and the Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health. These regulations ensure that stairlift manufacturers meet strict rules and requirements.
In principle, a lift solution can also be rented. However, it must be possible to reuse it elsewhere after removal. This is generally only possible with stairlifts for straight staircases. For curved stairlifts, usually only the carriage unit with drive and controls can be reused. The rail system, however, usually has to be purchased new because it is typically custom-made.
But you should keep in mind that rental prices also include costs for sales, logistics, installation, and service. This can mean that after as little as three years, the total cost of a rental solution may be equal to what the purchase of a new unit would have cost. The lift is, so to speak, paid for—and still does not belong to the user. Offers we are aware of often require a high down payment. So it’s worth calculating carefully how much you will end up paying.
If you are interested in an alternative to buying outright, we will be happy to inform you about other financing options.
Buying a stairlift is primarily your own decision and must also be financed by you. However, you may be able to apply for subsidies toward purchasing a lift solution. How much you actually have to pay yourself therefore depends, among other things, on any subsidies granted. In recent years, possible subsidies for conversion measures to improve accessibility in one’s own living environment have increased. On January 1, 2015, the Long-Term Care Strengthening Act came into force, increasing the subsidy per measure from the former €2,557 to up to €4,000. Up to four people can also receive a subsidy for the same stairlift, provided that all care-dependent persons live in the same house and the total subsidy amount remains below the purchase price. Various conditions must be met to submit an application for a subsidy. In particular, please note that the application must be submitted to the long-term care insurance fund before the stairlift is installed. With the second Long-Term Care Strengthening Act coming into effect on January 1, 2016, the previous classification into three care levels was restructured. This reform has applied since January 1, 2017 and assigns people in need of care—depending on the degree of their physical, mental, or psychological impairment—to one of five care grades. This reform also changed the principles for approving subsidies for so-called “measures to improve the living environment.” Since then, recipients in the new care grade 1 have also been entitled to these subsidies. For more detailed information on this topic, please contact your responsible long-term care insurance provider.
Because on-site planning, precise measurement of the installation situation, and installation are essential components of stairlift quality, choosing the right provider is highly important. The provider is later responsible for warranty coverage. The infographic below illustrates how closely the manufacturer or provider of a lift solution is involved in the process—from planning and commissioning to later maintenance. A carefully considered decision is always necessary.

Stairlift guide: Costs, models, and providers at a glance
Stairlifts give many people in old age or with limited mobility a renewed sense of safety in their own home. They improve mobility, help maintain quality of life, and make everyday life in stairwells or between multiple floors much easier. This Garaventa Lift stairlift guide provides a clear table of contents and summarizes the most important information about buying, installation, prices, and funding—helping you choose the right system.
Types of stairlifts, lift categories, and models for every need
Depending on the type of staircase, its shape, route, and the number of floors, different stairlift types and lift categories may be suitable. The classic option is the seated stairlift, but a standing lift (perch/standing solution) is also possible if sitting is difficult or space in the stairwell is limited. For wheelchair users, there are special platform solutions such as platform lifts and vertical lifts, as well as wheelchair lifts. In addition, outdoor lifts (for garden or terrace) and home lifts for larger height differences are available. This means there are suitable models and variants for almost any location and use.
Our experts always consider the individual conditions on site. This includes the floors and number of floors and the shape of the staircase, but also objects on the travel path, the load-bearing capacity of the structure, and the available clear space in the stairwell or outdoors. Modern lift systems from Garaventa Lift are planned to blend harmoniously into the look of the home—without damaging the stairs or leaving obstacles in the way.
Understanding costs, prices, and value for money transparently
Many people first ask about the costs of a stairlift. Stairlift costs and prices depend on many factors: the staircase route, shape, number of floors, the chosen type and functions of the selected model, indoor or outdoor use, and special wishes regarding comfort or energy efficiency. Depending on the model and equipment, costs can differ significantly—so a general price list can only ever provide rough guidance.
Instead of flat-rate prices, Garaventa Lift provides a personalized quote with fair costs and additional options, tailored to your budget and needs. Using a simple price calculator or a personal enquiry, you can quickly get initial prices and a transparent overview of expected costs. Our goal is excellent value for money combined with high safety, comfort, and long-lasting technology.
In addition to the purchase cost, there are possible funding options. Long-term care insurance funds often grant a care subsidy, and there may be additional funding advice, municipal programs, or loans to finance the purchase. Renting a lift or buying a used stairlift can also be a sensible alternative in some cases—for example, if a lift is only needed for a limited time.
Installing a stairlift: location, installation, and service
Installing a stairlift always begins with careful planning in advance. A Garaventa Lift expert checks all requirements on site: height differences, the installation location, the structure, the rail system, the travel path, and the available power supply. This ensures installation is quick, clean, and completed without damaging walls or steps.
Depending on the model and the staircase type, different options are used for installation: a curved lift for winding staircases across multiple floors, a straight lift for one level, or a platform for wheelchairs and rollators. An outdoor lift in the garden or on a terrace can also be installed to overcome height differences. Our company places great value on safety, reliable safety features, CE marking, and warranty. If desired, a warranty extension is available, giving you additional transparency and confidence for long-term use.
After installation, comprehensive service packages are available. Regular maintenance ensures the technology functions properly, reduces strain and wear, and extends the value of the system. Our service also includes fast help by phone—the appropriate number can be found on our contact page if you have questions about functions—plus personal advice from our team. Thanks to our experience and high customer satisfaction, customers can rely on a dependable partner.
Funding, health insurance, and financing compared
There are many questions around stairlift financing. In addition to traditional subsidies from the Pflegekasse (long-term care insurance) or health insurance, other financing options may be available depending on your location. In a consultation, our experts explain all options—from direct grants to loans—and compare with you which solution best fits your budget.
Stairlifts, accessibility, and everyday life in older age
For many seniors and others with limited mobility, stairlifts are an important step toward greater accessibility. There are many reasons for a lift—such as age-related changes, more safety in daily life, or easier care. They remove the barrier between floors and restore easy access to all rooms. Whether with a standing lift, platform, or classic seated stairlift, the goal is always to maintain mobility and quality of life in later years.
Especially when care becomes relevant, many people want to stay in their familiar home as long as possible. A stairlift, home lift, or outdoor lift can be a real alternative to moving house. It also supports caregivers, because wheelchairs, rollators, and other items can be transported more easily. This makes daily life safer and more comfortable for everyone involved.
Selecting, comparing, and assessing providers
The market for stairlifts and home lifts is growing, and there are various providers and brands, so finding the right system matters. Well-known names include Garaventa Lift and Lifta. A careful comparison of stairlift providers helps you find the right company. Pay attention to experience, service, maintenance, customer reviews, warranty, transparent pricing, and flexible financing. Possible disadvantages of individual lift types should also be addressed honestly so you can choose the best type for you.
Our guide offers practical tips, definitions of important terms, and many details on models, functions, service packages, and funding. This allows you to review information calmly, compare providers, and ultimately choose the option that best fits your needs, budget, and living situation.
